{"id":3348,"date":"2025-08-07T13:16:27","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T13:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kevinjgoodman.com\/?p=3348"},"modified":"2025-08-07T13:16:30","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T13:16:30","slug":"take-the-dis-out-of-disability-and-make-it-my-ability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kevinjgoodman.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/07\/take-the-dis-out-of-disability-and-make-it-my-ability\/","title":{"rendered":"Take the DIS out of Disability and make it my Ability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sometimes we are not our best at work, and we struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, this week, this month, this year, I\u2019ve needed to be lifted and be inspired. I&#8217;ve had my fair share of physical challenges. It takes a toll on one. I thought about who I could visit, think of,&nbsp;talk to, and&nbsp;remember. &nbsp;I\u2018ve often gotten out of my way or pain by loving and serving others. Truth be told, it was not working for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turning my focus to the dozens of Boards I have been blessed to serve on , I chose to look for inspiration there, as all of them have inspired me constantly. In that moment, I thought of a friend I met along the way, when I was a member of the&nbsp;Board of Directors at The Arc of Greater Cleveland under the Executive Director, Cindy Norwood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I met&nbsp;my new friend, Carrie Bergeron, at an annual bowling and pizza party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I remembered she has many roles and titles in her life. Among them, she is a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a daughter, sister, volunteer, teacher\u2019s aide, self advocate, motivational speaker, fitness enthusiast, teacher, friend, conversant in sign language, student, pioneer, teaches Ti Chi to seniors in an extended care facility, a dancer, a volunteer for many years now helping toddlers with cerebral palsy and most of all a powerful women\u2026 She also happens to have Down\u2019s Syndrome, and she carries and proves the mantra loud and clear, \u201cWe are more alike than different.\u201d She has among her many goals a committed passion to rid the world of the \u201cR\u201d word\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Carrie Bergeron - Advocate &amp; Motivational Speaker\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_cbGPYBoQ5g?list=PL6G4Ao3feBk9X--sbTOXz0WP7Jn8yNRXn\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Carrie declares to all of us, \u201cI take the DIS out of DISABILITY and make it my ABILITY to advocate for those of us with special needs.\u201d She is Carrie Bergeron, a self-advocate and teacher. Listening and watching her is precisely what I needed.
